Mistral, the Paris lab that has positioned itself as Europe's open-weight alternative to OpenAI and Google, raised €3 billion in Series D funding at a €21 billion valuation, according to TechCrunch.
Samsung led the round, with Scaleup Europe and PSG Equity also named. The size is the point: European governments have spent two years talking about 'sovereign AI' — models trained and hosted in the EU, under EU rules. This round prices that story as a real business, not a slogan.
A €21 billion mark does not mean Mistral has caught GPT-class models on every benchmark. It means investors will fund a second pole of frontier training outside the US, with industrial buyers (phones, cars, public-sector clouds) attached.
Watch next: how much of the cash goes into compute versus enterprise sales, and whether EU procurement actually prefers a European model when a US API is cheaper.
